How to take birth control pills?
One of the easiest birth control methods is the combination birth control pills because they come in two types. The first one is a 28 day pack and the other one is a 21 day one.
28 day pack
For this pack, you will first take 21 of the active hormones and then take the 7 placebos that do not have any active hormones. The seven birth control pills are taken in the fourth week and also when you have your menstrual period. There is a type that has 26 active birth control pills that have to be taken therefore it is good to enquire from your doctor when you are getting the prescription.
21 day pack
This pack requires you to take one pill each day for 21 days but unlike the other one, it does not have placebo birth control pills to be taken on the last week during menstruation.
The progestin-only birth control pills are only available in a 28 day pack and they are all active therefore all of them need to be taken.
The instructions on the package should be followed strictly. Health care providers offer advice on how the birth control pills should be taken. The birth control pills should begin being taken on a Sunday, the day your menstrual period starts or the day you get the prescription.
If you start taking them on a Sunday, the first active pill should be taken on the Sunday after you period begins even if bleeding is still present. If the period starts on a Sunday, begin taking the birth control pills on that day. With the 28-day pack, the birth control pills should be taken each day till they run out after which another pack can be started on the day after. If it is the 21 day pack, take a pill each day until they run out and take a seven day break before you start taking birth control pills from a new pack. Another birth control method should be used during that one week break.
If you start taking the pills on the first day of your menstrual period, make sure that it is taken at the same time each day. If you begin taking them the day your period starts, you will have a period on the first and fourth week while you are taking that your first pack. After the first pack, you will only get your period during the fourth week. This means that you do not need to use an alternative contraception method because there is immediate protection from pregnancy. While this is the case, it is still advisable to use condoms.
One pill should be taken at the same time each day until the pack is finished. To make sure that you do not forget to take the birth control pills, you should take it at the same time you perform a regular activity. The most appropriate time is about half an hour after your snack or meal or just before you go to bed. Nausea is common in the first month but goes away after some time. There are some women who prefer to take the birth control pills first thing in the morning but this is more likely to cause nausea especially if you do not have breakfast.
Select a time that is appropriate for you to take the birth control pills and you can also have a reminder on your alarm or calendar. It can also work well if you keep them in your bathroom near your toothbrush to ensure that you see them daily. A sticker or reminder on the bathroom mirror and even keeping them where you keep your underwear will also work well to remind you to take them.
As soon as you finish the 28 day pack, you should start on another one the following day. No days should be skipped in between the birth control packs. This is the method that most women prefer to use for contraception since you take a pill each day making it easy.
Can you take more than 21 days of hormone pills in a row?
Some teenage girls take 42, 63 or even continuous birth control pills for PMS, cramps and convenience since there is a form of contraception that is available in a pack of 84 active pills and four placebo pills. It is important to consult your health care provider before you start taking these pills. These birth control pills usually come in one color and can cause increased spotting. Insurance companies do not usually allow the use of extra packages without any medical reasons.

The regular schedule should be followed after this but a backup method is also necessary for seven days after the missed pills. If you do not get your period, make sure you talk to your doctor.
If 2 active combination birth control pills consecutively during the third week or if you forget to take 3 or more active combination pills consecutively in the first three weeks, you may get more than one menstrual period. It is also advisable to consult your doctor to enquire about emergency protection when this happens.
- If you started taking the pill on a Sunday, make sure you take 1 active pill each day until the following Sunday. The remaining pills should be thrown away and a new pack should be started on that same day. A back up method of contraception should be used for seven days after the missed pills.
- If you started the pill on the first day of your menstrual period, the remaining birth control pills should be discarded and a new pack started on that day. A back up method is necessary for seven days after missing your pills.
If you forget to take 1 progestin-only pill, make sure you take it when you remember. The birth control pills should be taken as usual therefore you may end up taking two pills in a day. The rest of the pack should be taken as usual with a back up contraception method for the rest of the month. The next pack should be started on time.

Incase you do not get two consecutive menstrual periods, you should see your health care provider to find out if you are pregnant even if you did not miss any pills and ensure you keep taking the rest of them.
It is common to miss your periods or experience a very light flow when you are taking birth control pills and it does not necessarily mean that there is something wrong.
